The changing scope of podiatry practice
Leading podiatrist Ainslie Davies recently completed a survey on the scope of podiatry practice for the Australasian Podiatry Council. Approximately 200 podiatrists responded to the survey. In a recent article in the Podiatry Bulletin, she discussed the findings.
The main two ways in which the scope of practice is expanding are:
- National registration/recognition of podiatric surgeons
- Endorsement for podiatrists for prescribing therapeutic medicines
Ms Davies also reported that almost half of the podiatrists surveyed saw themselves as either a specialist in a particular area or a general podiatrist with a special interest in a particular area. She also noted that there is a likely shift towards podiatrists working in a more collaborative environment in the future. That is, working in multi-disciplinary teams.
