The role of hospital pharmacists

Pharmacy

Pharmacists who work in a hospital have a very active role in patient care. They ensure that patients are taking the most appropriate medications, and that these are being used in the most effective way. This means that they are working closely alongside doctors, nurses and other health professionals, giving advice on how and when medicines should be given, potential side-effects, and correct dosages.

It is possible to specialize in a particular area as a hospital pharmacist, for example, emergency, paediatrics or oncology (cancer care). The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia’s national conference was held in November, where Dr Jason Roberts was awarded the Australian Clinical Pharmacy Award 2012. He is a consultant clinical pharmacist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and he specialises in medicines in infectious diseases and intensive care.
