AMSA calls for an end to UMAT prep courses

Medicine

UMAT was replaced by UCAT in 2019.

The Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) issued a press release in July 2012 calling for an end to commercial Undergraduate Medical Admissions Test (UMAT) courses. AMSA president Mr James Churchill said that some high school students were being charged up to $2,000 for courses making unsubstantiated claims about helping students gain entry into medical degrees.

The medical admissions preparation industry is unregulated in Australia, and Mr Churchill said that the quality of the courses could not be verified. He also said that the UMAT is designed to test general aptitude, and does not require study or intensive preparation. Mr Churchill called upon medical schools and the Federal Government to regulate the industry and prevent misleading advertising from commercial UMAT training providers.

The UMAT is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). We recommend you check out the UMAT practice tests available from ACER. http://umat.acer.edu.au/
