New accreditation for sports science and high performance management
Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) has released its new Sports Science and High Performance Manager (Sports Science/Sports Medicine) Accreditation following the Senate Inquiry into the Practice of Sports Science in Australia.
There were concerns that individuals describing themselves as sports scientists are continuing to perform a role within sporting organisations and clubs without appropriate qualifications and accreditation. Under this new accreditation, accredited professionals are required to work within their defined scope of practice, observe a Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice and maintain annual professional development.
ESSA will release its grandfathering pathway into the new accreditation. To be eligible, applicants must satisfy:
- 10 years full time equivalent (FTE) practice
- Hold a university degree related to exercise and sports science
- Demonstrate evidence of meeting the standards for an Accredited Sports Scientist or Accredited High Performance Manager through submission of 3–5 number of sports science case studies.
A person who has a qualification below a Bachelor degree (AQF 7) will be given provisional accreditation and will have three years to gain a qualification of a Bachelor degree (AQF 7) or above.
Please visit ESSA’s website to acces the application form.
