Tweet-a-thon shares how pharmacists make a difference

Pharmacy

Heard of the #pharmacist tweet-a-thon? We hadn’t. Luckily The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA) was all over it! They recently joined pharmacists from across the globe in the second annual #pharmacist tweet-a-thon. Pharmacists shared how they made a difference to patients and colleagues on the day. Natalie Bedini from SHPA explains why they got on board and the unexpected popularity of their tweets.

“We saw the tweet-a-thon as an opportunity to show the world that pharmacists are an important member of the healthcare team. It was also a day to be inspired by other pharmacists who were helping patients. It was wonderful to see and share the stories coming up in our Twitter feed. From kind gestures to life-saving recommendations, pharmacists making a positive impact.

We wanted to show the different ways pharmacists help patients and hospitals. We’ve researched the ways pharmacists make a difference in hospitals. From this research we produced seven fact sheets. We pulled some of the key statistics from the fact sheets and put them on real photos from Australian hospitals. The most popular tweet was “A #pharmacist makes a difference in the emergency department”. The tweet has been retweeted more than 200 times and seen by over 5000 people. It was a wonderful way to share our fact sheets to a wider audience.

A #pharmacist makes a difference in the emergency department was retweeted 202 times and reached over 5000 people. We also tweeted about the importance of Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacists (these pharmacists make sure antibiotics are used right in hospitals, which reduces antibiotic resistance) and how pharmacists help hospitals save money.

We were thrilled that our tweets were popular, but the most important tweets came from pharmacists who were sharing their work day. The ones who were making a difference.”

The #pharmacy tweet-a-thon is held on the first Thursday in October each year.  My Health Career would like to congratulate Natalie Bedini and the SHPA on their efforts in the 2014 tweet-a-thon.
