The road to success

Inspirational

After having exhibited at a number of high school careers events this year, I thought it was worth re-visiting an important concept that has been spoken about by many successful people, including basketball players LeBron James & Michael Jordan, and financial educator Kim Kiyosaki. It’s all about the road to success. I think that this image illustrates pretty much everything you need to know……

As you can see, a lot of people, including a number of the high school students I’ve spoken with this year, seem to think that there are two separate roads. One that leads to success and the other that leads to failure. People think that you are either a success or a failure, as though it’s not possible to be both at different stages.

The reality though, is that we learn by making mistakes. And there can be many, many failures on the way to becoming successful in a particular pursuit. The road to success may involve detours along the way. The road to success is often windy – you don’t just go along a single straight road. Failures need to be seen as things to move past. You will notice on the picture on the right that the failures are not permanent road blocks – they are just something that you need to navigate your way around. And when you do come to a road that is a dead end, be prepared to make another turn to keep moving!

The take home message is that success and failure are not two separate and distinct paths. Success is what happens after your failures, as long as you keep going!!
