Sally Pearson’s story of aiming high
Recently I read Sally Pearson’s autobiography Believe: An Inspirational Story of Aiming High. For those of you who might not know her as Sally Pearson, you might remember her hilarious interview (watch the video below) after winning a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics where she went by her maiden name Sally McLellan.
Now when I read the autobiography…. and yes, this may seem a little harsh….
To me, it seems that pure grit was the one thing that always seemed to get Sally over the line earlier on in her career. She went on to become the 2010 Commonwealth Games Champion, the 2011 IAAF World Champion, the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Champion and the 2012 Olympic Champion in her pet event, the 100m hurdles.
What I did see recently that I thought was promising for Sally is that she seems to be a lot more strategic in the more recent part of her career. In the following video, she is interviewed by Ato Boldon and talks about the patience an athlete needs to develop when they have an injury. She even talks about the benefits of having a physio with her!
Just in the last few weeks, Sally withdrew from top-tier Diamond League meets in Rome and New York as she aggravated her hamstring. She said that she had not torn or injured the hamstring, but felt that she would have had she competed. In my opinion, this is a good move, with Sally now looking at the bigger picture in her career. With the final of the women’s 100m hurdles to be run at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Friday 1st August 2014, we will soon find out!
