Pete Evans vs Dietitians
Pete Evans has been a regular in the tabloid headlines over the last few months. Getting some publicity just in time for the launch of his paleo cook book in November perhaps?
Most recently, Evans has claimed that the Paleo diet can prevent autism. He has also called for the National Heart Foundation to be abolished. But he has also taken aim at dietitian Susie Burrell and the Dietitians Association Australia.
Back on August 4, qualified dietitian and nutritionist Susie Burrell shared a product review about a breakfast drink on her Facebook page. She informed the nutrition fact and particularly stated that the although the drink was relatively high in sugar, there are worse choices that you could make for a breakfast drink. What was intended for sharing has invited an attack from her former partner on the FRESH cooking program, Pete Evans.
Evans is a celebrity chef who is a supporter of the Paleo diet, which promotes poultry, fish, eggs, fruit, vegetables and meat but bans all types of grains and dairy products. He responded to Ms Burrell’s post by saying that all nutritionists and dietitians do not know what they are talking about. Evans tells people that the Paleo diet, which he claims as real food, is the most natural and healthiest eating.

Evans has also challenged the Heart Foundation and the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), as both nutritional organizations have spoken out against the Paleo diet. He has stated that the DAA has some agenda or conspiracy to lead the Australians to be obese and unhealthy.
The DAA and the Heart Foundation, along with other health practitioners and experts took aim at the misguided diet, they explain about why Paleo diet is dangerous:
- Based on the bio-individuality theory, there is no diet that right for everyone, what is good for someone can be poison for another
- According to WHO, eating more meat than is actually needed is putting health at risk
- High saturated fat in the Paleo diet increases the risk of heart disease
- Some aspects of the Paleo diet are inconsistent with the Australian Dietary Guidelines
- It is strongly suggested that a balanced diet that mixes all food groups is the best approach to healthy living, and cutting out whole food groups like grains and dairy product is raise suspicious as it is not backed by science.
- Mr. Evans does not have qualification and experience to give recommendation to people
Evans has graduated as a health coach from online courses with New York’s Institute of Integrative Nutrition.

Why is Australia fast becoming the most obese and unhealthy nations on earth? Is this because we are a nation of self-obsessed, weak-minded people with no self-control? No. Is it because we are a nation that for far too long has been told to steer clear of foods naturally high in fat, which naturally trigger our fullness hormone, and instead told to eat 6 – 8 servings of processed carbohydrate a day, and wonder why we are still hungry after eating 3 cups of rice or 6 slices of bread?’Why has our rate of autism jumped from 1 in 10000 children in 1974, to 1 in 50 in 2014, where do you think it will be in another 40 years if it is escalating at this rate? This has grown rapidly since the guidelines have been in place!
Hello Autism Services,
Are you able to give reference to a study which shows it is diet and not another factor or group of factors leading to the escalating autism rate?
