Sedentary lifestyle a factor in university students’ vulnerability to mental health problems

Careers and University, Exercise Physiology / Science

According to Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), Australia as a nation is not exercising enough, largely simply because not being able to find at least the recommended 30 minutes each day. There is known evidence that physical activity significantly related to mental health, and ESSA encourages all university students to include physical activity as a means of maintaining and promoting positive mental health.

Research shows that even small amounts of physical activity can reduce risks associated with developing chronic conditions and diseases, such as mental illness. The high stress levels of meeting the expectations of being a student and the lack of parental contact make them vulnerable and changes in their mental health going unnoticed.

Hamish Fibbins, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist said that students in particular can underestimate the relationship between a healthy body and a healthy mind, making them particularly vulnerable when facing new academic challenges and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle of study and work.

Research led by headspace and the National Union of Students found that high numbers of Australian university and TAFE students are stressed and anxious, with many having thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

National Union of Students welfare officer Jill Molloy said there were a number of challenges that impacted on student’s mental health and well-being. headspace CEO Jason Trethowan said mental health services are available on Australian campuses, but differed from one to the next. headspace encourages students to manage study stress and stay socially connected.
