From high school – become a midwife

Check with the universities you are applying to for alternative pathways for high school graduates. Undergraduate midwifery courses in Australia are generally 3 years, with some universities offering a double degree in midwifery and nursing to become a registered nurse / midwife.

Graduate entry – become a midwife

Check with the universities you are applying to about alernative entry pathways for university graduates. There may be pre-requisite subjects that you must complete in your undergraduate course to be eligible to apply for entry into a graduate diploma or masters course in midwifery.

Please check with the institution you are applying to in case they have alternative entry pathways, or bridging courses to complete the pre-requisite subjects for graduate entry.

Re-entry to midwifery

In March 2023 the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia updated its policy for nurses and midwives who have been out of practice for 10 to 15 years. Resources available are:
