Have your say on the registration standards for paramedics

The Health Industry

The Paramedicine Board of Australia is holding a public consultation from December 20, 2017 to February 8, 2018 for the proposed national and mandatory registration standards of paramedics. These standards will be implemented by late 2018 under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.

The Board invites interested individuals and key stakeholders to review and give feedback on the following proposed standards:

  • English language skills
  • criminal history of applicants
  • professional indemnity insurance arrangements
  • continuing professional development (and supporting guidelines)
  • recency of practice

The proposed standards, divided in two categories; shared registration standards, and profession specific registration standards, will be passed to the Ministerial Council for approval in early 2018. English language skills and criminal history of applicants are categorized as shared registration standards and the rest as profession specific registration standards.

In detail, the profession specific registration standards cover the following:

  • requirements for professional indemnity insurance (PII) arrangements for health practitioners registered in the profession
  • requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) for health practitioners registered in the profession
  • requirements in relation to the nature, extent, period and recency of any previous practice of the profession by applicants for registration and health practitioners registered in the profession, and the pathways for qualification for general registration for a limited period (grandparenting)

To submit feedback, interested individuals can fill in the feedback form using the templates provided in the consultation papers here. Then, email response to paramedicine@ahpra.gov.au before 5pm AEDT on 8 February 2018.
