It takes a “special breed” to be an emergency department nurse!

Nursing

The Emergency department (ED) is a highly stressful environment, so it requires specialized staff who are not only good at nursing, but also possess certain personalities so that they can cope with high-stress levels of working in the ED.

The Sydney Nursing School at the University of Sydney has conducted a study of nurses’ personalities who serve in the emergency department. The study, led by Belinda Kennedy, was based on experiences of the difficulty in retaining nurses in this specialty area.

The study found that emergency nurses showed a high openness to experience, agreeableness, and extroverted personalities. In addition to their capacity to care for patients with serious health problems, there is the need to develop a rapport with patients and families from different backgrounds.

The research findings then become a reference for emergency nurses recruitment and retention, which is important not only for economic advantage, but also for patients and improve the morale among the nurses workforce.
