What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist? Choosing the right course for you!

Dietetics

There is SO MUCH confusion out there about the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist. Luckily, we have a great video from Prof Sandra Capra, who served three terms as national president of the Dietitians Association Australia to help with any confusion about the difference between nutrition degrees and dietetics degrees:

Points worth noting:

  • Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist in Australia – people with no qualifications at all, people who have done a short correspondence course, and people who have a three year nutrition degree
  • There is a national standard you must meet to become a dietitian – this includes study of subjects including statistics, psychology, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition sciences, food science as well as being competent in the three main areas of dietetics – clinical, food service management and community dietetics
  • Some universities offer dietetics as a postgraduate course – students looking to enter these courses must have completed specific subjects in their undergraduate nutrition degree
  • If you want to become a dietitian, make sure your course of study allows you to do this
  • Although you can ask the course provider what you can do with your qualification if you go through their program, My Health Career recommends that you always check with the Dietitians Association of Australia
