The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is running a national Specialist in Life campaign to highlight the value of general practice, targeted to political decision makers of all parties on what GPs actually do on a daily basis.
RACGP stated that the Federal Government’s actions are hitting GPs and their patients hard. They say the evidence is clear patients are paying more than ever before out of their own pockets to see their GP, as an effect of the unfair extended Medicare rebate freeze and the significantly underfunded and rushed Health Care Homes program.
RACGP President Dr Bastian Seidel said that they have had discussions behind closed doors, raised issues, put out warnings, and even taken the unprecedented move of launching a public awareness campaign before the Federal election.
“If the Medicare freeze continues there are two possible outcomes: either patients are asked to pay more to see their GP, or GPs will close their practices as the provision of quality health care may no longer be viable,” Dr Seidel said.
The Specialist in Life campaign is a reminder of the important role GPs play in delivering the health care that Australian needs and deserves.
Some GPs have taken to social media to show their support of the RACGP campaign:
