Careers and University, Dietetics

The 2013 CensusAtSchool survey result shows that 15% of school students are missing breakfast. While breakfast is considered as the most important meal of the day, they likely to lose the right fuel to perform their academic best.

Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) through their spokesperson, Julie Gilbert, said that a proper breakfast can help students to perform the exam, since it improves alertness, concentration, mental performance and memory.

Ms. Gilbert, who is a mother of four teenagers, shares tips on combination of healthy breakfast as the brain-fuel for students:

  • High in fibre; wholegrain cereal or toast, wholemeal muffin or crumpet
  • Low Glycaemic Index; fruit, beans, low-fat yoghurt
  • Protein; eggs, reduced-fat milk

Throughout the day, DAA encourages students to keep hydrated and avoid sugary and low nutrient snack.
