The pathway of study and supervised practice to become a general psychologist is a minimum of 6 years. To become registered with an area of practice endorsement (e.g. clinical neuropsychology, clinical psychology, forensic psychology or sport and exercise psychology) is a minimum of 8 years of study and supervised practice. The first 4 years are common to all pathways, and will be covered in this article.

It is extremely important that regardless of the pathway you take, your course/s are accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and approved by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). At the beginning of the pathway to becoming a psychologist via undergraduate degree entry is:

A 3-year APAC-accredited undergraduate sequence + 1 year honours = 4 years; OR

A 4-year APAC-accredited undergraduate sequence that includes the honours year

To gain entry into undergraduate courses that include the 4th year (honours), a higher ATAR is generally required than the 3 year sequence. While Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) students will need to score high enough grades in the first 3 years to proceed to the fourth year, students from 3 year APAC-accredited sequence degrees will need to apply for an honours year. The process of gaining a place in 4th year honours place is competitive.

Graduates of a number of degrees including psychological science, psychology, arts, social science, health sciences, science, and behavioural science must ensure that they complete the required APAC-accredited pre-requisite subjects in their undergraduate course to be eligible to proceed down the postgraduate pathway if their intention is to become a psychologist

Please note that the tables in this article show only single psychology degrees. There are hundreds of double-degree options including APAC-accredited sequences that you can complete with at a wide range of universities throughout Australia.

Undergraduate entry into psychology courses – 3 year undergraduate + 1 year honours pathway

The following tables show the ATARs / Selection Ranks that were required to enter each 3 year APAC-accredited undergraduate course at the beginning of 2022 in the various states and territories throughout Australia. Each state has the 3 year course followed by the 1 year of honours in a separate table. Please note that this is a rough guide only for future years as it changes from year to year depending on the applications each university receives.

Undergraduate entry into psychology courses – 4 year Bachelor (honours) degree

For entry into a 4 year psychology honours course commencing in 2022, the ATAR ranged from 70 to 99 depending on the course and university. Please note that this is a rough guide only for future years as it changes from year to year depending on the applications each university receives, and that some universities will also have additional selection criteria to gain entry.

Graduate entry into psychology courses

Graduate diploma courses are bridging courses where those who have completed an undergraduate degree in an area other than psychology can complete the APAC-accredited 3 year sequence in a shorter time frame. These are predominantly fee-paying places (i.e. not subsidised Commonwealth-supported) places. After completing the graduate diploma, you would then need to complete a 4th year honours (or equivalent) program in order to progress along the pathway to becoming a psychologist.

Pathways to becoming a psychologist in Australia

The Australian Psychological Society has an excellent explanation and pathway infographic available: https://www.psychology.org.au/Training-and-careers/Careers-and-studying-psychology/studying-psychology/Study-pathways. Please note that the 4+2 internship pathway is being phased out, and that no new applications are being accepted for this pathway. Those completing this pathway have until 30th June 2027 to apply for general registration. The 5+1 pathway or the 4 + 2-year masters is the requirement to become a registered general psychologist. Further training would need to be completed to become a psychologist with an area of practice endorsement.

Podiatry courses are available in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. Depending on the pathway you take, it will generally take between 3 and 6 years to become a podiatrist.

Undergraduate entry into podiatry

For entry into an undergraduate podiatry course commencing in 2022, the ATAR / Selection Rank ranged from the mid-60s to the mid-80s. The following table shows the ATARs / Selection Ranks that were required to enter each undergraduate course at the beginning of 2022. Please note that this is a rough guide only for future years as it changes from year to year depending on the applications each university receives and the places available.

Please note that you may need to complete pre-requisite subjects before entry into undergraduate podiatry courses.

If you don’t gain entry directly following high school, some universities will allow you to transfer into their undergraduate podiatry degree following a year in one of their other undergraduate degrees – for example a science degree. This will be dependent on your Grade Point Average in your first year subjects, and could also involve other admission requirements. You ATAR may also be considered. Please speak with an admissions officer at the universities you are considering applying for to see if this pathway may be available to you.

Graduate entry into podiatry

There is a postgraduate pathway available. An undergraduate degree with pre-requisite subjects will be among the requirements for course entry. Postgraduate courses to become a podiatrist are shown in the table below:

There are schools of pharmacy in every state and territory in Australia. Depending on whether which pathway you take, it takes a minimum of 5 to 6 years to become a pharmacist, and the pathway includes university study, supervised practice (internship), and a written & oral registration examination.

Undergraduate entry into pharmacy

For entry into undergraduate pharmacy courses in 2022, the ATAR/Selection Rank was generally in the 70s or 80s. Following is a guide for the ATAR scores or Selection Ranks for every pharmacy course in Australia in 2022:

Please note that apart from your ATAR, entry and/or placement requirements for undergraduate pharmacy may also include:

a police check

a working with children check

pre-requisite subjects

first aid training

health checks and immunisations

It is also worth noting that some universities will accept applicants who hold a full or partial Bachelor’s degree. Some universities also have specific entry requirements for students from a rural or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background. Please check with the universities you are looking at applying to for their complete entry requirements as this varies widely across the different universities.

After completing a Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, you are required to complete a 1-year intern training program and pass a registration examination to become a registered pharmacist.

Bachelor/Masters degree in pharmacy

The University of Sydney has a Bachelor/Master’s degree that includes the 1-year intern training program. You will still be required to pass the registration examination to become a registered pharmacist.

There are 7 schools of optometry in Australia. These in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, the Australian Capital Territory, South Australia, and Western Australia. The ATAR required depends on the pathway you take to become an optometrist. Depending on the pathway you take, it can take a minimum of 3.5 years to 7 years to become a registered optometrist.

Undergraduate entry into optometry

The following table shows the ATARs that were required to enter each undergraduate course at the beginning of 2022:

Please note that this is a rough guide only for future years as it changes from year to year depending on the applications each university receives. There are also changes from year to year on whether UCAT ANZ or an interview is required. For entry since 2018, UCAT ANZ has not been a requirement for any undergraduate optometry course. Requirements other than an ATAR, such as a personal statement may be required for entry into some courses, so be sure to check with each university.

Some universities may have a policy of “assumed knowledge” instead of pre-requisite subjects. For example, they will assume that you have the knowledge of 4 high school semesters of subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or English. Please note that other universities have pre-requisite subjects you need to have completed prior to entering their optometry programs.

Some universities may offer pathways to transfer into their optometry course from another one of their Bachelor degrees or from a Bachelor degree at a different university. There may also be specific pathways for students who wish to practice in rural and remote regions across Australia, and places for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students.

The University of Melbourne has a Chancellor’s Scholars Program for applicants who achieve an ATAR of 99.90 or better, or at least 90.00 for Indigenous students. They also have a guaranteed entry pathway into graduate degrees which applies to optometry for some students. The standard entry pathway involves completing an undergraduate degree in Biomedicine or Science, and entry into the 4 year Doctor of Optometry from these programs is competitive. Please look closely at the information on The University of Melbourne’s website regarding the various pathways.

Prior to starting clinical placements, requirements may include:

Immunizations

Completion of a First Aid course including CPR

A working with vulnerable people check

A police check

Postgraduate entry into optometry

There is a postgraduate pathway that available at the University of Melbourne and The University of Western Australia. They require an undergraduate degree with specific pre-requisite subjects and list courses which meet these requirements on their respective websites.

You can study occupational therapy in most states and territories in Australia. Depending on which pathway you take, it takes a minimum of 4 to 5.5 years to become an occupational therapist. Both undergraduate (Bachelor) degrees and postgraduate (Masters) degrees are available.

As well as the academic requirements to gain entry into the course which may include pre-requisite subjects, you may need to meet a number of requirements before going on clinical placement. These include:

Immunisations

A National Police Check

A Working with Children Check (Blue Card)

An NDIS Worker Screening Check

Cultural sensitivity training to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients

Undergraduate entry into occupational therapy

For entry into an undergraduate occupational therapy course commencing in 2022, the ATARs published by universities ranged from 60 to the mid-90s. Please note that many courses require pre-requisite subjects to be completed prior to course entry.

Following is a table of the ATARs for every occupational therapy course in Australia in 2022:

Please note that this is a rough guide only for future years as it changes from year to year depending on the applications each university receives, and that some universities will also have additional selection criteria to gain entry.

If you don’t gain entry directly following high school, some universities will allow you to transfer into their undergraduate occupational therapy degree following a year in one of their other undergraduate degrees – for example a science degree. This will be dependent on your Grade Point Average in your first-year subjects and could also involve other admission requirements. Your ATAR may also be considered. Please speak with an admissions officer at the universities you are considering applying for to see if this pathway may be available to you.

Postgraduate entry into occupational therapy

There is also a formal postgraduate pathway that is available at more than 10 universities around Australia. They require an undergraduate degree, with some universities having specific pre-requisite subject and additional requirements which they publish on their website.

A list of postgraduate occupational therapy masters programs is in the table below:

There are medical schools distributed in a range of capital cities and regional centres throughout Australia. Most medical schools will accept undergraduate students either directly into their medical degree or with provisional entry via a Bachelor/Masters degree program. Some medical schools require the completion of an undergraduate (Bachelor) degree for entry into their medical degree.

Undergraduate entry into medicine

Apart from your ATAR, entry requirements for undergraduate medicine may also include:

a UCAT ANZ score

an interview

a portfolio

a personal qualities assessment

a written application, assessment or registration form

pre-requisite subjects

a psychometric test

inherent or professional requirements

a police check

a working with children check

health checks

immunisations

the completion of first aid training before starting the course

Some universities also have different entry requirements for Indigenous students, and students from a rural, or refugee (Humanitarian Visa) background.

Some universities have entry pathways to their postgraduate medical course for Grade 12 graduates provided you complete a relevant undergraduate degree at their institution. These places are highly competitive and generally require an ATAR of at least 90. The pathway may involve provisional entry into medicine following a 3-year undergraduate degree, which in some cases can be accelerated and completed in 2 years.

Some universities take a mixture of undergraduate and postgraduate students into their Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery 5 or 6-year degree, although a number of universities have changed to a Bachelor of Medical Science or Bachelor of Medical Studies followed by a Doctor of Medicine (MD). Many universities have links to PDF documents that contain detailed information about the admissions process to their medical program. Be sure to check with the admissions officers at the universities you are looking at applying to in order to ensure that you are aware of the full admissions process.

Following is a guide to the ATAR scores for every medical degree with undergraduate entry in Australia in 2022:

Postgraduate entry into medicine

Some universities offer a 4-year Doctor of Medicine program specifically for postgraduate entry.

Apart from your Grade Point Average, entry requirements for postgraduate medicine may also include:

a GAMSAT score

an interview

a portfolio

a personal statement

a situational judgement test

pre-requisite subjects

inherent requirements

a police check

a working with children check

the completion of first aid training before starting the course

Some universities have different cut-off requirements for students from a rural background, Indigenous background or for humanitarian visa holders. It is unusual to be able to transfer from one medical school to another, but a limited number of universities will consider admissions for students in this situation.

Universities that offer postgraduate Doctor of Medicine programs usually have an undergraduate pathway for school leavers. These are covered in the Undergraduate Entry into Medicine section of this article.

Following is a guide to the entry requirements for every postgraduate medical degree in Australia in 2022:
