The degrees of unemployment

Careers and University

The Australian Financial Review has published an article “The Degrees of Unemployment: universities’ jobless” which includes a tool to search graduate salary and jobs data by field of study and university. Click on the link to find the outcomes for the course and university you are considering attending.

A Health industry example is the following percentage of dentistry graduates seeking a job 4 months after graduation:

  • 5.90% from La Trobe University
  • 7.70% from the University of Western Australia
  • 8.70% from the University of Queensland
  • 22.70% from the University of Melbourne
  • 22.70% from the University of Adelaide

A word of caution……
These statistics give just one measure of the university course – the percentage of graduates without a job. It is important to then do your own research as to why these numbers might vary For example:

  • the number of employers looking for dentists in a particular year
  • were dental graduates from Melbourne and Adelaide not willing to outside the metropolitan area to find a job?
