Concerns about the finances of university students

Careers and University

Continuing education at a university level has become increasingly difficult over the past several years. The cost of education combined with the demand on the students’ time has become a significant issue. Below are some figures from the University Student Finances in 2012 study on university student income:

  • Student loan debt has risen 30% in a mere six years, and about 66% report income levels below the poverty line.
  • Half of the university students feel that working outside of their education produces a negative effect on them and their education.
  • 80% of undergraduate students work an average of 16hrs/week or more.
  • 33% reported missing class for work, while 17% have gone without food or other necessities.
  • 50% of university students rely on family funding to continue their education.
  • 21% of all university students reported an income of under $10,000

Chief Executive of Universities Australia Belinda Robinson acknowledged the problem, but did not offer an immediate solution other than to say, “it is of sufficient concern to justify close monitoring.” So as we get towards the crunch time of year, when prospective students have put in preferences and will soon receive offers, it is important to consider the financial realities of being a uni student!
